TIBET PAGE 6

Outside Jokhang Monastery. The large "stoves" are NOT burning yak butter, but tons of incense. Yak butter which burns inside the temples doesn't smoke.

Pilgrims come from all over Tibet to pray here. Some bow and stretch themselves all day long. They first touch their foreheads, lips and chests, then kneel, then prostrate themselves by sliding forward (they use hand gliders for this). In order to keep their feet and legs together, some people bind them.

The air is thick with incense.

Pilgrims walk around the temple  clockwise, twirling their praywheels. There are always thousands of pilgrims. Some sell everything they have in order to make this pilgrimage.
